I Don’t, I Do

Yesterday, I spoke on the phone with a very pleasant person who is experiencing a difficult situation.  The person wondered if I, as a tarot practitioner, could make a certain result happen and if I could reveal exactly when that result would come into being.  I gently explained that my tarot work is about counselling and coaching and that I don’t believe any practitioner can “make something happen” on another person’s behalf.

Not knowing the facts about what we do is not the person’s fault.  There’s so much gunk out there about what a tarot “reader” does.  A little sensible information, uncluttered by superstition, is all that’s required.  There are so many unscrupulous scammers out there who would take advantage of this person’s delicate state in order to make a quick buck.  In good conscience, I can’t do something like that.  I invited the person to read my “services” page and to wait for at least two or three weeks.  Then, if they feel that what I offer would serve their best good, we can arrange to do a tarot consultation.  Perhaps we’re a match, perhaps not.  Either is OK.  May this person find insight and remember hir wholeness.

For the record, here’s a summary of what I don’t do in my tarot work and what I do in my tarot work:

I DON’T: cast spells for people or on people; predict exact outcomes (it’s not possible); promote fatalism; return lost lovers; talk at you the whole time; make grand pronouncements about you and your life; tell you how to run your life; suddenly throw in extra charges to remove so-called curses.

I DO: help people notice their patterns and beliefs; provide conditions to see possibilities and options; promote choice; guide you to love yourself; engage in dialogue with you over the cards; invite you to remember who you are and what your life is about; encourage you to take responsibility for your life; stick to an agreed-upon fee and time frame.

This feels like the first of what could become a few blog posts to help keep people informed about what’s possible and ethical in my work.  What other topics need to be here to keep the work of honest and life-sustaining practitioners of the arts of personal growth, healing, and cultural change in good stead?

Called by Council, Dream, and Oracle

Last night, I dreamt of shamanic practitioner and educator Caitlín Matthews and her Celtic Wisdom Oracle, a deck I acquired only recently.  Today I pulled a card from that pack in response to “What message do you have for me today?” The card I drew at random was the Lady of Life.  One of the questions that the Lady of Life invites me ask myself is, “Where can my greatest gifts and abilities be used best?”  This fascinates me because a couple of weeks ago, during a profound council circle with peers from one of my spiritual groups,  a very similar question — “What circle of community is an authentic forum and outlet for my gifts and skills?” — arose in me.
I’m struck by the convergence of council, dream, and oracle and so I will respect each of those by spending time with these two versions of what my Soul is asking me.
I also call upon YOU, my friends in this online circle, to respond to those questions, both about me and about yourself.  What ARE my greatest gifts and abilities?  What are YOUR greatest gifts and abilities?  Where CAN my gifts and abilities be used best?  Where can YOUR gifts and abilities be used best?  Please share your responses in the Comments.
